On March 16, an eleven-year-old boy was killed and 34 people were injured by a bomb in Banbridge, County Down. No warning was given.

On July 20, the Provisional IRA carried out two bomb attacks in London, one in a bandstand in Regent’s Park where an army band was playing. Eight British soldiers died immediately and three other people died later.

On November 9, outside the Lakeland Forum in Eniskillen, Detective Constable Gary Ewing and a civilian were killed by an explosive device attached to their car.

On November 11, the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Lurgan, County Armagh, shot dead three unarmed Provisional IRA men.

On December 6, over 150 people, many off-duty members of the Cheshire Regiment, were attending the Razzamatazz disco at the Droppin’ Well pub in Ballykelly, County Londonderry. The explosion of a bomb planted by the Irish National Liberation Army brought down the concrete roof. When the rescue efforts were over, twelve soldiers and five civilians had been found dead. Sixty-six people were injured.
